The Sheep Racing Grand National sees Ginger nut win in style
All of the sheep running today came to the Farm as orphans. The Grand National course covers just over a furlong and is horseshoe in shape, and like the real Grand National, this race is a steeplechase. The sheep all have names and race with knitted jockeys on their backs.
They start the race from their field and race towards the food trough, their finish line, and their prize for their exploits is extra food. Like the great Horse Grand National the fences have names too; such as Woolley Leap and Fleecers Brook.
The course after the morning inspection was passed and the going was good to firm. 2 non-runners were declared on the day bringing the field of 19 down to 17 runners. The bookies favourite was Jumping Jacob.
As with most great races the field were tightly packed with the winner, Big Boy leading pack from the off. The race took just 50 seconds but was a real crowd pleaser. The family who bet to own the winning sheep was the Lewis family who proudly took their place at the 'winner's enclosure'.
